OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro – Which one is Better and How much?

The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are official. Both of these smartphones share lots of similarities but also have lots of key differences. So let’s break down all of these key differences to help you decide which one of these is right for you. In this article, we are comparing the price specifications, features of OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro: Display

Starting off with the displays, the OnePlus 9 Pro has an overall better display. Both of these have small bezels with a hole-punch cutout, but the bezels do seem slightly smaller on the OnePlus 9 Pro because it has a curved display versus the flat display on the OnePlus 9. Both are dynamic AMOLED displays and comes with 120Hz refresh rate.

But OnePlus 9 Pro has some advantages over the OnePlus 9:

  1. It has a slightly larger display with 6.7-inch Quad-HD+ (1,440 x 3,216 pixels) resolution, giving you sharper details compared to the 6.55-inch Full-HD+ (1,080 x 2,400 pixels) display on the OnePlus 9.
  2. OnePlus 9 Pro uses LTPO technology that can drop the screen refresh rate to as low as 1Hz to save battery life by upto 50%.
  3. The pixel density of OnePlus 9 is 402ppi, whereas, the 9 Pro comes with 525ppi pixel density.
  4. We’ve also got a higher maximum peak brightness of 1300 nits vs 1100 nits on the OnePlus 9.

The OnePlus 9 Pro does have the overall better display but that’s not to say that the OnePlus 9 has a bad display. It’s also a very good display.

We’ve also got an optical in-display fingerprint scanner on both devices which works absolutely fine and fast. But I don’t like the placement of the fingerprint sensor.

Design and Build Quality

Moving over on to the builds and design, both of these share a very similar design. We’ve got a Hasselblad branded camera module with curved back and glossy finish. These smartphones are also available in some matte colour finishes as well.

The glossy backs look super cool and they are very reflective but they do attract lots of fingerprints. I would definitely opt for one of the matte finishes.

The Morning Mist colour option of OnePlus 9 Pro has a sort of silver color and then we’ve got the Winter Mist on the OnePlus 9, which kind of has a two-toned purple colour which does look pretty good.

The OnePlus 9 Pro does have an official IP68 water and dust resistance certification, but the OnePlus 9 does not. However, OnePlus have said it is watertight. Getting the official IP68 rating costs more money, and in order to keep the price down, the OnePlus 9 doesn’t have this feature.

The OnePlus 9 is also more compact smartphone, it’s smaller in size and it also weighs a little bit less. But I gotta say the OnePlus 9 Pro is also very comfortable to hold and use. It’s quite a bit lighter compared to some of the other flagship smartphones.

There’s a few things to keep in mind:

  • We’ve got gorilla glass 5 on these devices not gorilla glass victus which is the latest and most durable.
  • We’ve got slightly different versions of OnePlus 9 in different regions.

In india, the OnePlus 9 is actually slightly smaller and slightly lighter compared to its European and North American version. In Europe and North America, it comes with Qi wireless charging, however, in India and China, it doesn’t comes with wireless charging technology. This makes the device slightly smaller and slightly lighter.

Dimensions of the OnePlus 9 are 160 x 73.9 x 8.1mm, while the OnePlus 9 Pro measures 163.2 x 73.6 x 8.7mm. The weight of OnePlus 9 is 183 grams, while OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro: camera comparison

Talking about optics, the OnePlus 9 has a triple rear camera setup that houses:

  1. A 48MP Sony IMX689 primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture,
  2. A 50MP Sony IMX766 ultra-wide sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, and
  3. A 2MP monochrome sensor.

The OnePlus 9 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a quad rear camera setup that has an 8MP telephoto shooter in addition to the sensors that you’ll get on the OnePlus 9.

Ultrawide camera

Both devices have the same ultra-wide camera that takes really good, sharp images with lots of details and dynamic range. We’ve also got a free formal lens for the ultrawide camera which uses hardware to fix distortion.

The ultrawide camera also doubles up as a macro camera, so if you do get close around 4cm close to a subject, then it will refocus to that and give you some excellent macro shots.

Primary camera

For the primary cameras we actually have a pretty similar sensor size. We’ve got the same aperture and resolution but we do have a better sensor on the OnePlus 9 Pro. It has optical image stabilization (OIS), whereas, OnePlus 9 has electronic image stabilization (EIS).

In good lighting conditions, you won’t be noticing much of a difference, they both take good shots. Where you will notice a difference is when it comes to more tricky situations.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro camera test

On this example where i’ve got the Android in front of the sunlight. You can see that we’ve got a much sharper image on the OnePlus 9 Pro compared to the OnePlus 9. I’m assuming this is because of the OIS on the 9 Pro that gives you overall brighter images and also keeps more things in focus.

Check out this picture:

In low light, the OnePlus 9 has struggled to keep it in focus. Whereas, the OnePlus 9 Pro has actually done a good job.

When it comes to portraits, the 9 Pro does do better compared to the OnePlus 9. However, portraits are not good on either of these. The 9 Pro actually does not use the telephoto camera at all for portraits. It uses the main camera and crops in for the 2x results.

As you can see, results are not too good. You can see the areas around the head have been blurred out, but the 9 Pro does do a better job compared to the 9.

Zoom camera

The OnePlus 9 Pro also has a dedicated optical zoom camera that will give better zoom images.

Here’s an example of it at 3.3x and you can go up to 10z digital zoom on the OnePlus 9. If we compare this to the 9 Pro, you’re getting better results. The 9 Pro can go all the way to 30x digital zoom which is terrible. You can get some pretty decent results at 10x.

Monochrome camera

Both devices also have a 2MP monochrome camera which is supposed to give you better black and white images.

Videos

When it comes to video, OnePlus 9 Pro can shoot up to 8k at 30fps from the both primary and ultra wide camera. Both devices give very good and sharp quality videos. It can also shoot at up to 4k / 120 fps. Oneplus 9 has the option to shoot at 4k / 60fps.

Front camera

Both of these have the same front-facing cameras that can take some pretty decent selfies with preety good dynamic range.

But one area where I’m very disappointed is when it comes to the front camera of OnePlus 9 Pro. You’ve only got 1080p recording option and the video quality is very very bad. Not having 4k video recording option is unacceptable for a flagship in 2021.

It really seems like the front-facing cameras were very much an afterthought for OnePlus because they concentrated on this whole Hasselblad partnership on the rear facing cameras.

Hardware and Software

Under the hood, both of these are powered by the latest and greatest Qualcomm snapdragon 888 SoC, along with 8GB/12GB LPDDR5 RAM with 128GB/256GB UFS 3.1 storage. OnePlus has always been up there in terms of the specifications and both of these have been absolutely great in terms of performance.

OnePlus 9 Pro runs on OxygenOS 11

For software we do have Android 11 with OxygenOS on top which is a optimized, minimal, clean, fast and smooth Android skin. I have to say that it has been inspired by Samsung’s OneUI. There is a lot more here for one-handed usage which is very impressive.

We also have stereo speakers with dolby atmos (one in the earpiece and one bottom firing), which actually sound very good. But the speakers of OnePlus 9 Pro is a little louder.

Winner: Both

Battery Life and Charging

Both of these phones have the 4,500mAh batteries, but battery life has been interesting. A YouTuber, The Tech Chap did a battery drain test and he found that the OnePlus 9 gave better battery life compared to the OnePlus 9 Pro, even though both devices were at Full-HD+ resolution. OnePlus 9 gives an hour extra time.

Thus, we can say that OnePlus 9 will give you 10-15% more battery life compared to the Pro model. I was expecting the OnePlus 9 Pro to perform better, considering that it has an LTPO display technology, but looks like its larger display consume more battery.

When it comes to charging, the good news for both devices is that they do support Warp Charge 65T, which is very very fast. Also, the charger is included out of the box. This will charge your OnePlus phone from 1 to 100% in just 29 minutes which is faster compared to the OnePlus 8 Pro which was around 39 minutes.

Warp Charge 65T can charge OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro in around 30 minutes

Aa mentioned above, the OnePlus 9 also supports 15W Qi wireless charging in Europe and North America (not in China and India). The OnePlus 9 Pro supports Warp Charge 50 wireless, which is crazy fast.

You will need a specific charger to be able to output that much energy. However, if you do get that you’ll be able to go from 1 to 100% in around 43 minutes which is very impressive for wireless charging.

The 9 Pro also supports reverse wireless charging, so you’ll be able to charge some Earbuds or another device wirelessly on the back of the this phone.

Winner: OnePlus 9 Pro

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro: Price in India

Now finally let’s talk about pricing. The price of OnePlus 9 starts at Rs 49,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model, while the price of 12GB RAM + 256GB storage model has been set at Rs 54,999.

The OnePlus 9 Pro, on the other hand, comes at a starting price of Rs 64,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant, and its 12GB RAM + 256GB storage carries a price tag of Rs 69,999.

The OnePlus 9 offers Arctic Sky, Astral Black, and Winter Mist colour options, while the OnePlus 9 Pro will be available in Morning Mist, Pine Green, and Stellar Black colours.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro: Conclusion

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro
OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro

On the OnePlus 9 Pro, you’re getting an overall better display with the Quad-HD+ resolution, LTPO technology, and the higher peak brightness. You’re also getting an overall better primary camera as well as that telephoto camera for optical zoom.

On the OnePlus 9, you are getting an overall better battery life. But a software update can improve the battery performance  of the 9 Pro. You are also getting faster wireless charging on the 9 Pro, and in certain regions you’re not going to get any wireless charging support on the OnePlus 9.

So how much are those advantages important to you?

If they are quite important to you and you can justify spending that extra Rs 15,000, then the OnePlus 9 Pro will be the better option for you. But if those are not so important to you, which I think for a lot of people they won’t be that important, then I think the OnePlus 9 is a very good device.

That’s what I think. What do you guys think about the OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro comparison? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
